How do you best care for the glass to keep it clean and clear from soap scum, calcium deposits, bacteria, mold and other buildups that can even be dangerous to your health?

Soap Scum is a white solid buildup of soap and hard water. An effective natural and low cost way to remove this is with white vinegar. It is recommended to use a sponge then wipe off the door with a rag soaked in warm water after five minutes. Even though you may be left with a vinegar smell, it should dissipate after a few showers.

Mold and Mildew can be black, green or pink and grows on moist surfaces. Mold and mildew can be harmful to your health by causing respiratory problems and allergic reactions. White vinegar is also a good option if mildew or mold is present on your shower doors.

Calcium deposits /Hard water spots are cause by water with a high mineral content. To clean these you can use a citrus based glass cleaner or lemon and a sponge.

In addition to glass shower doors the door hardware and frame has specific cleaning concerns. Never use an abrasive cleanser of any kind on the hardware. Many fixtures are coated with a clear lacquer that will be irreparably damaged if subjected to harsh abrasive chemicals or scrubbing devices. Stick with mild liquid soap and a warm water mixture, wiping and drying will keep it looking beautiful for a long time.

Some types of shower doors are available with a hydrophobic coating. This protector repels water from the glass surface preventing deposits from clinging to the smooth surface.

The best way to maintain your glass doors and the beautiful finish on the hardware is to wipe it down after every use or at least weekly. After you shower, use a dry towel to thoroughly dry the hardware.

It is advised not to use ammonia or bleach when cleaning glass shower doors or hardware. If you buy a commercially produced product check that these ingredients are not present. Ammonia and bleach will ruin the hardware and frame by eating through the metal finish, and cause an uneven color and texture.  Ammonia and bleach products can strip shower glass and metal of its protective coatings.
